English for Upper-Intermediate Learners Micro-credential

This micro-credential is designed to enhance and expand learners' English language skills, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Utilising a published coursebook and supplementary materials, students will engage with contemporary topics and real-life contexts, fostering both language competence and critical thinking.
This micro-credential is ideal for individuals who have completed an intermediate level of English and are eager to advance their proficiency. It caters to a diverse audience, including residents, new immigrants, and professionals seeking to solidify their English skills for social, academic and/or workplace contexts.
The curriculum includes integrated practice, formative assessments, and collaborative activities to ensure a dynamic and supportive learning environment, ultimately preparing learners for real-life applications of English at an upper-intermediate level.
This micro-credential is structured into weekly units, carefully designed to integrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. This structure ensures students gain a well-rounded and practical mastery of English language skills, aligned with the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Each weekly unit incorporates core skills with targeted grammar and vocabulary. Activities include in-class discussions, collaborative tasks, and self-study exercises. Formative assessments are conducted weekly, leading to comprehensive mid-course and end-of-course summative assessments.
The programme aligns seamlessly with CEFR B2, emphasising practical communication skills.
On successful completion of this micro-credential, learners/ākonga will be able to:
- Identify main ideas and details in complex recordings on social, professional and/or academic topics that are familiar or produced for a general audience.
- Express detailed concrete and abstract information orally on social, professional and/or academic topics that are familiar and/or topical.
- Identify main ideas and details in complex texts on social, professional and/or academic topics that are familiar or written for a general audience.
- Write detailed texts on social, professional and/or academic topics that are familiar and/or topical.
- Domestic learners: Must be 16 years or older.
- International learners: Must be 14 years or older.
Placement Test:
All learners, domestic and international, will undertake an English proficiency test prior to class assignment. This ensures learners are placed in the level that best suits their current language skills and learning needs.
General Requirements:
- All learners must possess a valid visa (if applicable) and have suitable travel and medical insurance.
- Every learner will undergo an English proficiency test, or have been assessed as being able to succeed at this level, to confirm they are placed at the appropriate level for their learning needs.
